Chico High cousins Paige Sitanggang and Kylie Vaughn faced off against Pleasant Valley’s Amelia Bielaszewska and Maddux Wilson in the Eastern Athletic League individual doubles title on Tuesday afternoon at Community Park tennis courts in Chico.

Sitanggang and Vaughn defeated Bielaszewska and Wilson 6-0, 6-1 to claim the EAL doubles title. Ten minutes later the cousins Sitanggang and Vaughn faced off for the EAL singles title with a crowd made up of family, teammates and others from surrounding courts watching.

The two players rallied back and forth from the start, having played tennis together since a very young age. Vaughn, a freshman, stuck to her game and would not make an error as she defeated the sophomore Sitanggang 6-3, 6-2 to claim the EAL individual singles championship.

“I knew it was going to be a battle and a very emotional match between those two. They are like sisters and they were hesitant to play each other because they knew someone had to lose,” Agnew said. “They are the two best players in the tournament and Kylie just played so smart and error-free tennis.”

After the match, both the winner and loser were in tears.

Chico High assistant coach Matt Schaefer said he’s never seen more tears after a match between two players, showing the true emotion, care and respect between the two players.

Next up for Sitanggang and Vaughn is the Northern Section individual tournament beginning Saturday at Las Plumas. The NorCal Championships are on Nov. 8 at Chico High School and the state tournament begins Nov. 18 in Folsom.
