Following her exit from the Hong Kong Open, there’s little time to rest for Amanda Sobhy as the American gears up to play her sixth WSF World Squash Team Championship.
The former World No.3, who recently returned to competitive squash after almost a year out after rupturing her Achilles for the second time.
Two years ago, Sobhy led Team USA to a moment of history as they reached the final of the event for the first time, with Sobhy, supported by Olivia Weaver, sister Sabrina Sobhy and Olivia Clyne all impressing in a run that included a statement win over five-time champions England in the semi-final.
Looking ahead to this year’s championships, which are taking place at Hong Kong Football Club from 9-15 December and feature both the women’s and men’s events together for the first time, the 31-year-old said she was embracing her role as her young team’s ‘seasoned veteran’.
Her team is going through a period of transition at this year’s championships, with ever-present Sobhy and World No.4 Weaver joined by rising stars 22-year-old Marina Stefanoni and 19-year-old Caroline Fouts as the next generation of US Squash steps onto the biggest stage.
“I’m excited to represent Team USA again, this will be my sixth World Team Championships, we’ve got a couple of young’ns coming in representing the team so I’m just really excited to play on the team and it’s always a privilege playing for Team USA,” Sobhy said.
“I want to be that kind of ‘big sis’ role model, the seasoned veteran and I have a lot of experience and I hope that I pass it down to them and make them feel more comfortable on the team.”
“I think we’re we’re really excited to come together as a team and take it to everybody!”
