The 2025 ESF European Team Division 3 Squash Championships on 2-5 April will mark the official opening of the spectacular new Maltese National Squash Centre in Marsa.

The European Team Division 3 Championships, the first of the ESF’s major championships that take place annually in spring, will be the first event held at Malta’s new six-court, government-funded national centre in the Marsa  Sport Malta Complex.

The centre features an all-glass showcourt with seating for 350 spectators, plus five other courts, four of which can be opened up into two doubles courts. The centre is five minutes away from the island’s previous biggest squash facility at Marsa Sports Club, which has five courts and can share hosting of major tournaments in future.

Malta Squash will have its federation office at the new complex, which they will share with the national weightlifting and netball federations. It will be the new home of the national junior squash programme led by Niall Engerer, as well as hosting the Malta Junior Open, Maltese Masters, matches in the thriving 18-division national league and other competitions.

“It is incredibly exciting to have our own national squash centre,” said Ivan Balzan, Treasurer and Technical Director of Malta Squash. “This will give our junior and senior national teams excellent training facilities and enable us to have more squash camps and competitions.

“This would not have been possible without the Government’s full support via Sport Malta and we have to thank the team from Sport Malta led by Mark Cutajar.”

Liz Said, President of Malta Squash, said: “This is a dream come true for Malta Squash and it’s thanks to Sport Malta and CEO Mark Cutajar that Malta Squash will finally have a home and an office.

“Myself and Ivan have been on the committee for nearly 30 years, so this is our dream. We cannot wait for the ESF European Division 3 Squash Championships. We are just finishing off the last elements of the new building, so we will be ready in plenty of time.”

The ESF European Team Championships have undergone a change of format for 2025. In addition to changes in the number of teams in Divisions 1 and 2, Division 3 will be limited to 15 teams per category (male and female) this year. If there are 16 teams or more entered, the event will automatically be split into a Division 3 of eight teams and the remainder in a new Division 4.
