PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Members of the Brown women’s tennis team wrapped up competition for the weekend today, Sunday, Oct. 23. Britany Lau and Addison Ahlstrom competed at the ITA Super Regionals, while other members of the team participated in the Brown Classic.
Â
Super Regionals is comprised of the top 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams from the northeast who are competing to qualify for the ITA Fall National Championships. The finalists from the singles and doubles portion of Super Regionals qualify for nationals.
Â
In singles, Lau won three matches, advancing all the way to the semifinals, before falling one round shy of qualifying for nationals. In doubles, Lau and Ahlstrom won their opening match, but fell in the quarterfinals today.
Â
“Britany competed extremely well in singles beating three high-level opponents in her run to the semifinals,” head coach Lucie Schmidhauser said. “She stuck to her plan, showed courage in clutch moments and had trust in her ability to problem-solve. In today’s match against the No. 3 player in the nation Freyman, Britany was impressive in her willingness to stay in points as long as needed and in her willingness to trust her game plan and take risks when necessary. It was a pleasure to coach her this weekend as she continues to grow her game and mental fortitude.
“Britany and Addie had a good win against a quality St. John’s team in the round of 16 on Saturday. They had some opportunities in today’s match they didn’t execute on to come out on top in their quarterfinal match, but they learned a lot and I’m confident they will take the information from the match to become an even better team.”
Â
At the Brown Classic, Vivian Miller and Nora Lee each earned a pair of singles wins, while as a team, Brown swept the doubles matches they played in.
Â
“This weekend our team had a chance to compete on our home courts and showcase their development in front of friends and family,” assistant coach Matthew Haugen said. “At times, our players looked sharp and played with clarity. They honed in on their style of play and worked on adding new dimensions that will make their opponents uncomfortable. There were also moments where our players missed opportunities to close out games and finish sets. We need to continue to work on capitalizing on opportunities to put our opponents away.”
