After an epic week of squash at Hong Kong Football Club, we’re down to the last day of action as the four remaining teams battle it out for the WSF World Squash Team Championship titles.
This year’s competition is an historic one, representing the first time that the women’s and men’s events have been held simultaneously.
Playing order today is 3-1-2 and you can watch the action live and free on WORLDSQUASH.TV as well as on partner channels, including the Olympic Channel.
Play begins at 17:30 (GMT+8) with the women’s final, followed by the men’s final.
Final placing ties are also taking place throughout the day, including on the indoor all-glass court. View the full order of play, plus results, draws and squad lists for the World Squash Team Championships here.
Both finals will see rivalries renew in what’s sure to be a gripping pair of ties.
The women’s final is a repeat of the 2022 edition in Madinaty, Egypt, which saw USA reach the final for the first time in their history.
Egypt emerged victorious by a 2-0 scoreline to claim a third title in a row in front of the home fans that day, though it was anything but straightforward for them as then-US No.1 Amanda Sobhy pushed Egypt’s Nouran Gohar to the brink of a shock defeat in a five-game epic, before Nour El Sherbini made short work of Olivia Weaver.
Since then, much has changed, with Gohar absent due to surgery, Sobhy only recently back to elite squash after an achilles rupture one year ago, and Olivia Weaver in brilliant form but feeling her way back from an injury suffered in last week’s Hong Kong Open final.
With the playing order 3-1-2 today, it will likely be down to Rowan Elaraby and Marina Stefanoni to give their side the advantage before El Sherbini and Olivia Weaver lock horns once again. If the scores are level at one match all, it will likely be Hania El Hammamy against Amanda Sobhy in the decider.
Can USA make history by winning their first ever title? Or will they find, as so many have before them, that Egypt’s legendary squad depth and penchant for a big occasion proves to be an immovable object?
The men’s final sees a continuation of the modern game’s great rivalry: Egypt v England.
These two sides have contested the last five finals, with Egypt winning four to England’s one.
Last year, Mostafa Asal and Ali Farag proved too strong for Alexandria-born brothers Marwan and Mohamed ElShorbagy, though Mohamed came close to levelling the tie in a brutal match against Farag, who describes the Englishman as the greatest rival of his career.
It will likely be Curtis Malik and Mazen Hesham who are called into action in the first match tonight. With this their first ever match against each other, both men will hope to spring a surprise on their opponent.
Up next, first strings Farag and Mohamed ElShorbagy will prepare to battle it out once again in what would be the 34th match between the pair.
Although the head-to-head record between them is a close one, with Farag winning 18 and ElShorbagy 15, recent results have gone the Egyptian’s way, with Farag winning the last six meetings: a run ElShorbagy will be desperate to halt.
Should the scores be level at one match all, a mouth-watering rematch between Mostafa Asal and Marwan ElShorbagy looks to be on the cards.
Can Egypt extend their winning run and win a fourth title in a row? Or will England spring an upset to end their reign?
